Assistant Managing Editor/Digital for Startup Daily News Publication

Cascadia Daily News, a startup digital daily/print weekly newspaper in Bellingham, Washington, seeks an enterprising, nimble assistant managing editor to produce and maintain its news website, design a weekly print edition, and distribute news via social media feeds. We’re seeking an inquisitive, team-oriented journalist who is not just a digital production person, but a vital member of our news management team.

About: The assistant managing editor/digital editor will have the rare opportunity to help craft an enterprising news publication from the ground up. The publication, led by a longtime daily newspaper veteran, is set to launch in January 2022 with a staff of up to 10 full-time journalists.

Cascadia Daily News, a fully locally owned enterprise, is committed to boosting the quantity and quality of local news in Bellingham, a growing city of 90,000. Our coverage area will comprise the northwest corner of Washington state, filling a news void between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seattle.

Located between northern Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains, Bellingham is flavored by a strong arts scene, a regional university, active outdoor recreation, and a burgeoning microbrew culture. The population is highly news literate and historically underserved by local news publications. Our news staff aims to reflect the soul of its unique home.

Location: This position is expected to be full time in the newspaper office located in an historic building in downtown Bellingham, Washington. Remote work is not an option.

Hours: Full time, primarily Monday through Friday.

Reports to: Managing editor.

Compensation: Salary range is $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience. Competitive benefits include medical, dental, vision, paid time off and a 401(k) savings plan.

Core responsibilities:

  • Produce and manage the digital and print production of a daily news publication in a fast-paced, competitive daily news environment.
  • Regularly post news, photos, graphics, video and other material to maintain an active daily news website.
  • Regularly post news material on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms, and send news alerts and roundups via email newsletters and other digital delivery systems.
  • Design and lay out weekly print newspaper edition.
  • Serve as a sharp-eyed, backstop editor for news content before posting or publication for a news organization hyper-focused on accuracy.
  • Help other editors foster and maintain a digital-first culture across the newsroom.
  • Provide editorial team with regular site traffic reports for insights into reader engagement and interests.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in web production, print layout and experience maintaining social media feeds in a deadline environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Constantly-in-touch communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
  • Impeccable copy-editing
  • Working knowledge of common news-industry content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Microsoft Office and other common software products.
  • Openness to helping journalists tell stories in nontraditional formats.
  • Familiarity with current AP Style rules and adherence to the publication’s ethics policy.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Recent experience managing news products via Ellington/Duet or similar content management system is a plus.
  • Ability to use raw analytical readership data as a tool to advise on coverage priorities and maximize audience reach. (SEO knowledge a plus, but clickbait artistes need not apply.)
  • Ability to produce and edit graphics and create locator maps is a plus.
  • Experience with investigative, enterprise or data stories and projects is a plus.
  • A desire and ability to employ creative design touches to a new publication owned by a visual artist.
  • A desire – a full step up from willingness – to mentor young journalists.

Core responsibilities:

Manage daily operation of a newsroom working in a competitive news market.

  • Responsible for scheduling, assignments, editing, story budgeting, meetings, photo assignments, etc.
  • The M.E. will craft and supervise daily and enterprise coverage that includes: local government, schools and businesses; higher education; a port district, including boating, maritime and fisheries industries; a busy international border; a thriving agricultural community; and three tribal nations, all in an environmentally delicate region that includes Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience in newsroom management.
  • Prior reporting/writing experience at a daily news publication.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, assign, edit and collaborate across the newsroom to cover both breaking news and enterprise projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
  • Constantly-in-touch communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to pitch in and cover breaking news when warranted.
  • Impeccable copy-editing

Business Operations Manager for Digital/Print Newspaper Startup

About: Cascadia Newspaper Company LLC, based in Bellingham, Washington, is seeking a full-time business operations manager to oversee the non-editorial functions of a locally owned and operated digital daily/weekly print news publication.

The startup publication is scheduled to launch in January 2022, with an editorial staff of six to 10 professional journalists.

Location: This position is expected to be full time in the newspaper office located in downtown Bellingham, Washington. Remote work is not an option.

Reports to: The business operations manager would report directly to the publisher.

Core responsibilities:

  • Manage advertising operations: Recruit and manage an advertising sales force. Expand advertising opportunities, both print and digital, through market research and community outreach. Monitor systems used for advertising contracts, ensuring ads are run and payments are collected. Approve sales commissions and expenses. Verify contracts procured by sales staff. Assist with client relations.
  • Subscriptions and print delivery and distribution: Develop and maintain subscription systems and accounts. Coordinate with printing company and newspaper distribution staff to assure timely delivery of weekly print editions.
  • Business planning and budgeting: Develop budgets for all non-news operations. Research, evaluate and procure community partnership and other possible funding sources to supplement operating budgets and staffing.
  • General editorial support: Have working knowledge of all content management and communication systems, both hardware and software. Ensure the maintenance of communications systems, working with outsourced IT providers as required. Purchase equipment and supplies.
  • General accounting and HR support: Interface with outsourced accounting staff and benefits personnel to support accounting, payroll and related activities. Knowledge of QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online is a plus.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Prior leadership experience in a media company.
  • 5+ years of experience in business administration, project management or business operations.
  • Working knowledge of business analysis, budget and financial planning cycles.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a similar field.
  • Experience in sales and sales management.
  • Knowledge of content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Accounting certification.
