If you’re an avid or even casual user of social media, you’re probably familiar with reels — short videos created specifically for Instagram and Facebook that emulate the style popularized by TikTok. If you’re not familiar with reels, Facebook keeps its most popular reels here; go ahead and take a look. Some of the more popular trends in Instagram reels are here.

If your brand produces content that lends itself well to video, reels offer a way to better reach your audience. Consider that on Instagram, for example, reels create 67% more engagement than standard videos.

Canva, an online graphic design platform, offers a simple way to boost reels with graphics, music and pre-made templates — helping all marketers, no matter their underlying skillset, take advantage of the immense popularity of short-form videos.

Here are five tips for creating reels using Canva:

  1. Use eye-catching visuals: Since reels are short-form videos, you want to grab your audience’s attention quickly. Use high-quality visuals that are colorful, bold, and engaging to keep viewers hooked.
  2. Keep it short and sweet: Reels have a maximum length of 90 seconds, so make sure you keep your content concise and to the point. Use captions or on-screen text to convey your message if necessary.
  3. Add music: Music can add a lot of emotion and energy to your reel. Choose a track that complements the visuals and mood of your content.
  4. Use templates: Canva offers a variety of templates specifically designed for creating reels. Use these templates as a starting point to save time and ensure your reel looks professional.
  5. Add a call-to-action: Make sure your reel has a clear call-to-action at the end, whether it’s to follow your page, like the post, or visit a website. This will help convert viewers into followers or customers.

Not sure what reels are, exactly? Canva has a great beginners’ guide that you should check out.

According to Hootsuite, reels — on both Instagram and Facebook — are here to stay, given the intense growth of reels on Facebook since the rollout. Our advice is that marketers should start setting aside time to test reels, perhaps even considering carving out budget money to invest in paid reels. Tools like Canva help make that process easy.
